Do I still have to send my food to a lab for nutrition analysis?

No, you don’t need to send your food to a lab for nutrition analysis. Using MenuSano for nutritional analysis is a valid and effective alternative. MenuSano relies on government-regulated databases, such as the USDA’s FoodData Central and the CFIA, and follows FDA guidelines for accuracy and compliance. This ensures the software meets regulatory requirements, including FDA labelling standards for nutrition facts, rounding rules, and daily value calculations.

We do offer laboratory testing through our lab partners. Our services include nutrition testing, a nutrition facts table in PDF and EPS formats, and a review service for fact label format, ingredients, allergens, and dietary claims. Check out our Lab Analysis Service for more information.

How does "Supplement Facts" differ from "nutrition facts?

The key differences between the “Supplement Facts” panel and the “Nutrition Facts” panel are as follows:

  • For dietary supplements, you must include dietary ingredients without RDIs or DRVs in the “Supplement Facts” panel, while these ingredients cannot be listed in the “Nutrition Facts” panel for food.
  • The source of a dietary ingredient can be listed in the “Supplement Facts” panel for supplements, but it cannot be included in the “Nutrition Facts” panel for food.
  • If a dietary ingredient is listed in the “Supplement Facts” panel, you are not required to state its source in the ingredients list for dietary supplements.
  • The part of the plant from which a dietary ingredient is derived must be indicated in the “Supplement Facts” panel, whereas it cannot be mentioned in the “Nutrition Facts” panel for food.
  • “Zero” amounts of nutrients cannot be listed in the “Supplement Facts” panel for supplements, but they must be listed in the “Nutrition Facts” panel for food.
What information must I list in the "Supplement Facts" panel?

You are required to include the names and quantities of dietary ingredients in your product, along with the “Serving Size” and “Servings Per Container.” However, the “Servings Per Container” is not necessary if it matches the net quantity of contents. For instance, if the net quantity is 100 tablets and the “Serving Size” is one tablet, the “Servings Per Container” would also be 100 tablets and doesn’t need to be listed separately.

What are the labeling requirements for supplemented foods?

All supplemented foods in Canada are required to include a Supplemented Food Facts table (SFFt), which is similar to the standard nutrition facts table. The SFFt features a distinct heading, “Supplemented Food Facts,” follows the same guidelines for listing core nutrients, and displays the total amount of each supplemental ingredient under the section titled “Supplemented with.”

Which food categories can be supplemented, and which cannot?

Certain food categories are permitted to be supplemented, including bars, fruit drinks, and carbonated water-based beverages. However, foods that are not eligible for supplementation include infant foods, products aimed at children under four years of age, foods for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, alcoholic beverages, special dietary foods, prepackaged unprocessed or minimally processed foods, and most fortified foods like milk and breakfast cereals. These items are excluded either because different regulations govern them or because there is a higher risk to vulnerable populations, such as young children. For more information on permitted supplemented food categories and the process for adding or modifying categories, please refer to the relevant guidance documents.

What is the new front-of-package regulation, and does my product need FOP labels?

The new front-of-package (FOP) regulation in Canada, implemented by Health Canada, requires pre-packaged foods high in sodium, sugars, or saturated fats to display a clear FOP nutrition symbol on the front of their packaging. This regulation aims to help consumers quickly identify foods that contain high levels of these nutrients, supporting healthier food choices.

Your product will need an FOP label if it exceeds the following thresholds per serving:

  • Sodium: 15% or more of the daily value (DV)
  • Sugars: 15% or more of the DV
  • Saturated Fats: 15% or more of the DV

For pre-packaged meals, the threshold is 30% or more of the DV for any of these nutrients. However, some products, such as raw single-ingredient meats (except ground meats) and certain dairy products, may be exempt from these requirements.

To determine whether your product requires FOP labelling, you can use MenuSano’s nutrition analysis software, which includes tools to assess compliance with the new regulation. For more information on the new FOP regulations, check out this article on our blog.

How is the ingredient list generated?

The ingredient list is generated by compiling data from the recipe’s individual ingredients. Users can enter the ingredients manually, or the system provides automatic suggestions based on the recipe’s ingredients. The software also tracks each ingredient’s quantities and nutritional values, ensuring the list reflects accurate and up-to-date information. The process aims to streamline ingredient management for recipe creation, making creating an accurate list for menu planning or nutritional analysis easier.

How does MenuSano compare to a laboratory analysis?

There are two ways to derive a meal’s nutritional facts. The more traditional approach is a chemical analysis performed in a lab where food is incinerated and tested for nutrient content. However, this process’s results are limited to that specific sample; unavoidable variations during preparation or ingredient variations cannot be accounted for. This also requires testing multiple samples to obtain an average, making the process very costly.

The second way is the MenuSano solution. It is done by calculating data from previously chemically tested ingredients and scaling those nutrient values to match the amounts used in the final food product. The USDA, Health Canada, and the UK Government have compiled a database with nutritional information on ingredients commonly found in Canadian, British, and US diets. Not only is MenuSano the more affordable solution, but it is also the more flexible, time-saving, and accurate approach to calculating nutritional facts.

What does PDCAAS mean?

The Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS) is a method used to evaluate the quality of a protein based on its amino acid content and digestibility. It measures how well the body can utilize a protein, with a maximum score of 1.0, indicating a high-quality protein that provides all essential amino acids in sufficient amounts. This scoring system is widely used in nutrition labelling and dietary assessments.

Knowing the PDCAAS score helps food manufacturers assess protein quality, ensure nutritional value, meet regulatory standards, and make informed labelling claims for their products.

A high PDCAAS score ensures consumers get high-quality, easily digestible protein, supporting better nutrition and overall health.

How can I set the PDCAAS value on MenuSano?

When editing the recipe, click “calculation method” on the right, then select the PDCAAS option in the protein calculation section. Make sure you enter the value next and then click on update.

What is recipe yield, and why might you need to adjust it?

Recipe yield refers to the total amount of food a recipe produces, typically expressed as the number of servings, total weight or volume, or items made. For example, a recipe might yield “12 muffins” or “4 servings of soup.” You may need to manually edit the recipe yield when adjusting portion sizes, ensuring consistency for meal planning or restaurant standards, accounting for moisture loss during cooking, or correcting inaccuracies in the original yield. Making these adjustments helps maintain accuracy and ensures the recipe meets your needs.

How can I create combined recipes in MenuSano?

To create a combined recipe in MenuSano, click “Combined Recipes” on the left-hand menu, then select “Add New Combined Recipe.” Enter the necessary details and search through your existing recipes to combine them into dishes. Additionally, the dropdown menu allows you to access various report options, including the Protein Quality Report, Amino Acid Score, and Single Nutrient Report. You also have the option to download the complete recipe profile.

What calculation methods does MenuSano offer for calories, protein, and daily values, and how do they differ?

MenuSano offers multiple calculation methods to ensure accurate and customizable nutrition analysis. For calorie calculation, it utilizes either the Total Value, which calculates the total calories using each ingredient’s calories in the recipe or the 4-4-9 method, where calories are determined based on macronutrient content: 4 kcal per gram of protein, 4 kcal per gram of carbohydrates, and 9 kcal per gram of fat. For protein calculation, MenuSano provides two options: the default method, which is the standard DV% calculation as used by other nutrients, and PDCAAS (Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score), which adjusts for protein quality and digestibility. Additionally, for daily value calculations, users can choose between two methods: calculating based on rounded values, which aligns with regulatory rounding rules, or calculating based on unrounded values, offering more precise nutrient percentage determinations; this is an advanced option where there’s a regulatory risk of non-compliance in which MenuSano is not responsible for it or any issues arising from the use of unrounded values.

Can I Override Label Nutrient Values?

Yes, MenuSano allows you to override label nutrient values using the Override Nutrient Values feature, giving you full control to input and display your preferred values. However, MenuSano is not responsible for any regulatory non-compliance or issues that may arise from modifying the system-generated nutrient values. The users are responsible for ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant regulations.
